EU is ready to sign Association Agreement with Ukraine if Yulia Tymoshenko case will be resolved

According to José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, EU is ready to sign Association Agreement with Ukraine following the 26-28 November summit if Ukrainian authorities will find the way to resolve the case of Yulia Tymoshenko and the problem of the so called selective justice which is the matter of deep concern of the European and other Western countries as well.

During the press conference held after the EU summit in Brussels Mr. Barrosso stated that there have been talks between him, Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich, Herman Van Rompuy, President of European Council, and other representatives of EU and European side is ready to sign the Agreement, but Ukraine need to fulfill all the obligations it took in the framework of the cooperation with the EU countries in attempt to make the next step on the path towards European integration. He also stressed that Ukraine has already done a lot in different fields including the judiciary, but there is still the problem of the selective justice and politically motivated oppressions remaining as a significant obstacle for the signing of the Agreement.

The case of Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukrainian ex-Prime Minister and charismatic oppositional leader currently imprisoned is one of the main problems and obstacles Ukraine is facing on the eve of the November summit. This problem should be also resolved, stated Mr. Barrosso expressing the position of EU countries and their leadership.

The solution of this problem is necessary for EU and for the EU cooperation with Ukraine, declared President of European Commission. There is a special mission of EU headed by the representatives of the European Parliament Pat Cox and Aleksander Kwaśniewski, and they have visited Ukraine several times in order to study the situation and the issue of Yulia Tymoshenko and to hold negotiations with Ukrainian authorities regarding the European perspective and the possible ways of the solutions. Mr. Barrosso in his statement called for Ukrainian authorities to cooperate with this mission as it is the best way to resolve this problem and to enable the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and EU.

oppositional leader

Yulia Tymoshenko remaining behind the bars is the main obstacle for the future of Ukrainian and EU cooperation. European Commission needs this issue to be resolved and the reforms of the judiciary to be implemented in attempt to avoid the political oppression and selective justice in the future and to resolve the current issue of Yulia Tymoshenko and several other oppositional figures currently imprisoned.

It’s worth mentioning that Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich has stated recently that he is ready to sign the decree allowing Mrs. Tymoshenko to travel abroad for medical treatment. Yulia Tymoshenko in her turn has accepted the proposal of the German hospital to be treated there.

There are also several possible legal ways to resolve this issue, according to the experts and to Ukrainian official figures, but the positions of different political powers remain divided as oppositional forces for example insist that Yulia Tymoshenko should be fully rehabilitated. Yulia Tymoshenko has previously stated that she will continue her fight with the injustice and will demand her release and political rehabilitation, but she is ready currently for the partial decision as well in order to help Ukraine to sign the Association Agreement with EU which will become a step of the great historical importance for Ukraine.
